Thank You

Casper before his operation

Thank you everyone for all your lovely well wishes, kind thoughts, emails and advice. It means a lot to me and my Mum and Dad. Just to update you, the response we have had from my breeders has been very derisary, I cannot go into details at the moment for legal reasons, but Mum and Dad are not happy with the outcome so a formal letter is going out today and we have been told that we have a good case to be represented in court, so unless anything changes e.g. a better offer, it looks like that is the road we will be going down.
Mum also intends to start a campaign/petition as we feel that breeding puppies with genetical problems must stop here and now, (especially by breeders accredited by The Kennel Club). We do not want to see any more puppies have to suffer with my conditions.
Mum and Dad took all precautions before purchasing little ole' me. I was purchased from a breeder accredited by The Kennel Club and Mum and Dad went all the way to Nottingham to get me to ensure (or so they thought) that they were getting a puppy with no genetical problems. So what went wrong? This is what we need to campaign about, to ensure this does not happen again to anyone else. Mum has been a campaigner for animals for many years, petitioning, standing outside with banners in the rain and so on, no matter what the distance, so she's an old hand at this and she's like a dog with a bone when she feels something is wrong especiallyconcerning animals.
I am feeling much better every day now but it is going to be a long old haul to get me walking properly again. As I said in a previous post I have to have my right knee operated on in around 6 weeks (same as this op), and then there are both hips to be replaced one at a time. Mum says I'm a tough old "Chocolate Pudding" and that she is very proud of me. My vet has said that after all the surgery has been completed I should be able to walk and run like any other dog, so I'm looking forward to that.
I will let you know when my campaign is online so you can pop along and show your support, and have your say if you would like to. I am now on Facebook so I will be adding my badge to my blog soon so that you can visit me there too.

 See ya all soon

Casper Back Home

Casper after first knee operation 16th June 2011
I am now back at home and doing well after the surgery on my left knee. I had a groove cut into the bone for my kneecap to sit properly and I had to have it pinned also. I am just able to walk about for toileting and eating but mostly I am resting on my mattress or in my crate. I cannot go for a walk for 4 weeks and then only short walks up to 6 weeks. I then have to go back to Bristol for more x-rays and assessment. My own vet thinks that the orthopaedic surgeon will want to then operate on my right knee to avoid it causing any problems with my corrected knee. After about 3 months the plan is then to do my hip replacements, one at a time.
I am doing ok now but the procedure was very painful after I had woken up. I had strong  painkillers (last dose last night) and am still on antibiotics and Metacam. I have about 20 staples in my knee and Mum says I cried and whined a lot the first few days but I am much better now, no crying or whining.
Altogether my treatment is costing in total around £12,000 by the time it is all finished. As my problem is genetical, Mum and Dad have been in touch with the breeder where I was born to see if they are willing to help with the cost as you don't expect to adopt a dog (as Mum says) for £600 and then have to spend £12,000 for him to be able to walk properly do you. I will let you know how we get on with that.
Good breeder or Bad breeder, that waits to be seen I suppose! Hopefully they will do the decent and moral thing and help with the cost. Please leave your opinion in my comments.
Well, I'm off for a nap now!
Catch ya all laters!

Surgery Today

Me at the caravan a few days ago

I am in Bristol at the moment with my Orthopaedic Surgeon, having surgery on my left knee (Luxating Patella). I will have the right one done in 2 to 3 months. Unfortunately Mum and Dad have had to leave me in Bristol untill tomorrow as I have to have a tube in to drain the fluid off, but hopefully they will be able to pick me up and bring me home tomorrow.
As for my hips, xrays were done on them also and they are what is known as "Floating", they are not in the socket. My bones are all in good shape but my hip problem is going to have to be sorted also in the near future. Looks like a total hip replacement for me.
Mum will let you know how I am getting on.
See ya all soon
